Upcoming festival : Balarama Purnima

We are pleased to invite you and your family to our Balarama Purnima festival on Sunday, 10 August at 3:30pm.

We look forward to seeing you all at the festival.

Lord Balarama is the first personal expansion of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All other incarnations expand from Him. In Lord Krishna’s pastimes, He appears as Krishna’s elder brother. Together Krishna and Balarama enact many pastimes as cowherd boys in the land of Vrindavan. Lord Balarama carries a plow and club and is known for His great strength. Therefore devotees pray to him for spiritual strength.

About the festival
The Upanisads explain that to obtain self-realization one should be favoured by Balarama.

Srila Prabhupada explains that “Bala does not mean physical strength. No one can attain spiritual perfection by physical strength. One must have the spiritual strength which is infused by Balarama or Sankarsana.”

Lord Balaram incarnated as Lord Nityananada in the age of Kaliyuga, to assist Lord Caitanya in delivering the fallen conditioned souls of this world.

“Lord Balaram is also original Spiritual Master. So duty of Spiritual Master is also to purify the heart of the disciple…We can think of Spiritual Master as Balaram’s representative, Lord Nityananda’s representative or Radharani’s representative."

On this day, devotees celebrate the day with special offerings to Lord Balarama including a special honey and ginger infused drink that He favours called "Varuni"

“One devotee described the personal beauty of Baladeva as follows “Let me take shelter of the lotus feet of Balarāma, whose beauty is enhanced by the earrings touching His cheeks. His face is decorated with tilaka made from kastūrī [musk], and His broad chest is decorated with a garland of guñjā [small conchshells]. His complexion is as white as an autumn cloud, He wears garments of blue color, and His voice is very grave. His arms are very long, touching His thighs, and He has shown His great strength by killing the Pralamba demon. Let me take shelter of this chivalrous Balarāma.” (Nectar of Devotion Chapter 41)

More about Lord Balarama

Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Sri Krsna, appeared in this world to enhance and support the transcendental pastimes of the Lord. Being non-different from Lord Krsna Himself, Lord Balarama is known as the original spiritual master. Devotees of the Lord, pray to Him for spiritual strength.

Lord Balarama is the first expansion of Lord Krishna. He appeared in the womb of Devaki as her seventh child. Kamsa, the evil brother of Devaki, had imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva and had also mercilessly slaughtered her six newly born children. After the appearance of Balarama in the womb of Devaki, Lord Krishna instructed Yogamaya, his internal potency, to transfer Balaram from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s other wife. As he got transferred from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini he also came to be known as Sankarshan. Since he is the source of all spiritual power, or bala, and spiritual bliss called ramana, he is known as Balarama.
